How To Care For Your Wool Bedding

How To Care For Wool

Simple Care for a naturally hardworking fiber.

Wool is naturally breathable, moisture wicking, antimicrobial, odor resistant, and wonderfully low maintenance. Unlike many conventional bedding materials, most wool bedding doesn’t need frequent washing to stay fresh.

Air + Sunshine = The Best Care

Give your wool bedding a chance to breathe. Each morning, pull back your bedding and allow moisture from the night to evaporate. When weather permits, or at least once a season, place your bedding in a clean, dry spot in the sunshine and fresh air.

How To Care For Your Wool Bedding 1

The UV from the sun and fresh air naturally refresh wool and help keep it smelling clean.

When Something Spills

For the majority of our wool bedding, spot cleaning is all you need.

  1. Blot the area gently with a clean towel
  2. Use cool water and a small amount of mild, wool safe soap
  3. Gently clean the affected area. Don’t scrub or agitate the wool at all
  4. Press out the excess moisture with a towel
  5. Allow the bedding to dry completely before using it again

Never wring or twist wet wool.

Most Wool Bedding Should Not Be Machine Washed

Unless your specific product is labeled washable, do not put in the washer and dryer.

Shepherd’s Dream Machine Washable Wool Products

Some of our products are specifically designed to be washed in cold water on a delicate cycle with a wool safe detergent. A front loading washer without an agitator is preferred. Avoid unnecessary or frequent washing.

If You Have to Wash Your Wool

Things happen and sometimes you have no other option than to fully wash your wool product. We get that and want to give you the handwashing basics to keep your woolens as good as new!

  • Fill a basin with room temperature water. Not hot, and not cold
  • Add a wool safe detergent. We use Eucalan (1 tsp. of Eucalan per 1 gallon of water)
  • Add your wool product that needs to be washed and soak for 15 minutes minimum
  • Very gently squeeze the article to incorporate water and soap through fibers
  • No need to rinse!
  • Blot it with a clean dry towel to remove excess moisture
  • Dry flat, stay away from any heat or direct sunlight

A NOTE ABOUT WOOL

Wool is naturally antimicrobial and designed to handle moisture. It doesn’t need to be washed as often as many other bedding materials.

TLDR: WHEN IN DOUBT, LESS IS MORE

  1. Air
  2. Sun
  3. Spot Clean
  4. Machine wash only when necessary

IMPORTANT

Avoid hot water, harsh detergents, vigorous agitation, wringing and twisting. Never put wool in the dryer unless specific product’s care instructions say it’s safe. Always make sure wool is completely dry before using or storing it.
