The Natural Mattress – A Non-Toxic Alternative Solution

Say Bye-Bye to Bedtime Chemicals Once and For All!

You don’t like dangerous chemicals in your food or in your home, so why should you sleep on a literal bed of toxic chemicals every night when you go to sleep? You will spend almost a third of your life in bed, so it’s no wonder why so many people want to make sure they find the best natural mattress that is as safe, healthy and chemical free as possible.

It may surprise you to learn that your mattress may contain toxic chemicals that are proven to be bad for your health and the environment. These toxins — known in the industry as “volatile organic compounds” (VOCs) — are emitted as gases and include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short- and long-term negative health effects.

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “Concentrations of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors (up to ten times higher) than outdoors.” Exposure to VOCs have been proven to have measurable impacts on the health of infants and children, pregnant mothers and adults in general.

Whether you have chemical sensitivities or are concerned about the health of your body and the planet, we encourage you to try an all-natural mattress that is 100% non-toxic, chemical free and eco-friendly.

“My mattress and bedding are nearly 2 years old now and it is wonderful. My mattress, Snuggle Mate, and latex slats offer a firm but very cuddly nights sleep. The wool bed is always the right temperature, and my arms and legs don’t go numb while I sleep. I love that I can take the bed layers apart to sun them and refresh them. Thank you, Shepherd’s Dream, for making my beautiful bed! Well worth the investment.”

“My husband and I absolutely LOVE this mattress. It is nice and firm but still soft enough to be very comfortable. The best investment ever! Worth every penny. We also like that you can roll it up, we have King size one so if you are moving it would be much easier to move it.”

So What’s in your Traditional Mattress?

Unfortunately, manufacturers aren’t required by law to disclose the usage of flame retardants and other toxic chemicals on the mattress legal label — not to mention mattress brands frequently make misleading claims to suggest that their products are eco-friendly and all-natural. The reality is that adding some natural ingredients or a green leaf symbol on the label doesn’t change the fact that the mattress contains toxic chemicals which are bad for your health and the environment.

The only way to truly sleep your natural best is to avoid these toxins commonly found in traditional mattresses.

Flame Retardants
As of 2007, all mattresses must be able to withstand a 2-foot wide blowtorch open flame for 70 seconds without catching fire. To meet this guideline, manufacturers use a troubling amount of controversial fire retardant (FR) chemicals to counteract the highly flammable polyurethane found in most traditional foam mattresses. In fact, nearly 92% of the market, or most major sleep product brands, use fire retardants to cut costs. Commonly used FR chemicals include boric acid, antimony and decabromodiphenyl oxide (deca), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and melamine. These toxic flame retardants and others have been shown to cause skin irritation, memory loss, lower IQ, cancer, birth defects and organ damage.

Polyurethane

Polyurethane
Most memory foam mattresses from major brands contain polyurethane. Polyurethane is a petroleum-based chemical and therefore extremely flammable, which is why it must be treated with flame retardants that emit chemical odors. Off-gassing of these toxins can result in poor indoor air quality and negatively affect your physical and mental health — not to mention they are damaging to the environment. Polyurethane-based products can cause a variety of asthma-related health reactions such as irritation of the skin, eyes, nose and throat, breathing difficulties and chest tightness.

Chemical Glues
Mattress glues and adhesives can affect your health and many are proven carcinogens. Glues used in the mattress industry primarily consist of formaldehyde, methylene chloride, n-Propyl bromide and acetone. These adhesive ingredients are made to maximize the speed, strength and ease when making a mattress, but are noxious and toxic when inhaled by humans. In short, adhesives help boost manufacturer profits over consumer health.

Synthetic Latex

Synthetic Latex

The use of cheap synthetic or blended latex, which often contains polyurethane and other chemical fillers, is common in traditional mattresses. Instead of being harvested from rubber trees, synthetic latex like SBR (styrene-butadiene rubber) is produced from petrochemicals. Synthetic latex saves manufacturers money, but hurts the consumer by making the mattress less durable, less springy, more odorous and more carcinogenic. In contrast, the natural latex used in our mattresses is processed domestically and sourced from South America and Southeast Asia. Because of our high standards, our manufacturer maintains close relationships with these rubber plantations to ensure quality and consistency.

Instead of using these and other toxic chemicals, Shepherd’s Dream handcrafted mattress and mattress pads are lovingly filled with all-natural materials such as 100% pure EcoWool batting, natural Dunlop latex and organic cotton sateen.

So, what’s in our Natural Mattresses?

Mattress labels can be misleading. When it comes to finding the best non-toxic mattress, first and foremost you’ll want to make sure the product is certified with the most rigorous industry qualifications — such as the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). GOTS certification requires that at least 95 percent of the mattress materials be certified as organic.

At Shepherd’s Dream, our philosophy is different than most mattress manufacturers who use poor quality materials to boost profits. Since 1997, it has been our joy to deliver high quality natural bedding and excellent customer service to a growing population of natural product lovers nationwide – all from our home in Montague, California.

Our natural mattresses are 100% chemical-free and American made. We only use the highest quality materials and believe in environmentally-responsible, sustainable production techniques and industry practices.
