The Perils of Conventional Mattresses

Ditch Your Chemical Mattress

Did you know that most conventional mattresses are damaging to your health and the environment? It’s true. They’re made with flame retardant chemicals, carcinogenic chemicals and pesticides, formaldehyde, and polyurethane foam.

These toxic chemicals can cause respiratory problems, increase your exposure to allergies, and have been linked to lung, nose, and throat cancers. The hazardous production process also has a devastating environmental impact.

Toxic Chemicals

Polyurethane foam is primarily made up of compounds derived from petrochemicals such as petroleum. This material emits volatile organic compounds that are easily absorbed and irritating to our lungs and skin.

Formaldehyde, the chief ingredient in embalming fluid, is also commonly used as an adhesive to hold synthetic mattresses together. This chemical can cause a burning sensation in the eyes, nose, and throat, among other more severe risks outlined on cancer.org.

Sometimes it’s obvious that a mattress is full of carcinogens and pesticides because they have a strong chemical odor. However, a mattress can still off-gas when it’s 10 years old and there’s no chemical smell.

Up until 2004, the most popular flame retardant chemical was Pentabde when it was discovered to be toxic to the liver, thyroid, and nervous system. It was eventually phased out but now it’s not clear exactly what conventional mattress makers are using in its place. Major manufacturers won’t divulge their flame-retard formulas under the guise of a “trade secret.”
